Apple Cranberry Chutney

Tart with sweet notes of cinnamon, this apple cranberry chutney is the perfect accompaniment to turkey or chicken. Or try it as a topping on baked Brie. The original recipe is from Canadian Living. I love that it’s failproof and takes only 15 minutes to make. Because it tastes better the next day, it’s a great recipe to make ahead.

Using apples cuts the need for copious amount of sugar, and quercetin in apples packs an antioxidant punch. I like the versatile Cortland apple in this recipe, but feel free to swap in another cooking apple. (Here’s a handy guide to apples.) Plus the hit of vitamin C and antioxidants from the cranberries makes this recipe a winner.

Apple Cranberry Chutney

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp canola oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (or use 1/2 a medium onion)
  • 1 package (340 g) fresh cranberries
  • 1 Cortland apple, peeled and but into 1/2" chunks
  • 3 tbsp maple syrup (or 1/4 cup brown sugar)
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • pinch of salt and cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. In a small pot, heat oil over medium heat.
  2. Cook onion until slightly softened, about 4-5 minutes.
  3. Add all remaining ingredients. Cover and bring to a boil.
  4. Reduce heat to low, and cook until cranberries pop and apple is soft (approx 15 minutes).
  5. Throw away cinnamon stick before serving.
  6. Serve warm or at room temperature.

2 packs of fresh cranberries are frozen in my freezer. Looks like this is what they will become. Thanks for the timely recipe Zannat!
