Heart Super Powers
Grown primarily in Saskatchewan, Canada produces one-third of the world’s lentils. Canadian lentils are part of the pulse family – a family that is fresh off an amazing 2016 as the UN’s official health food (the International Year of the Pulse). The two most common types of lentils that we can find on grocery store shelves are large green lentils and split red lentils.
Lentils are an integral part of a heart health coalition. Long known as a great source of plant-based protein, several studies have shown that eating high fibre foods like lentils reduces your risk of heart disease through its ability to lower cholesterol and blood pressure (1).
Lentils are also a great source of folate, magnesium and potassium, which are big contributors to heart health. Folate lowers your homocysteine levels, a serious risk factor for heart disease. Magnesium and potassium help in keeping your blood pressure in check.
While all pulses (chickpeas, lentils, dried beans and peas) are heart healthy, lentils comes out a winner as you don’t need to soak them before cooking. Canada produces one-third of the world’s lentils, 96 per cent of it in Saskatchewan (2).
