The 150 Power Bowl

Happy February everyone! Because it’s Heart Month we’re going to post five power bowls that are heart healthy. The bowls will also feature mostly Canadian ingredients. First up is the 150 Power Bowl. In honour of Canada’s 150th, this power bowl is jam packed with a ton of flavour and Canadian foods from coast to coast. Tossed with a dressing made with maple syrup, mustard and turmeric, this bowl features the best of Canada.

Feel free to customize this bowl with whatever vegetables you have on hand.

A few time-saving tips:

  • Roast a tray of vegetables when you have time so that you can enjoy it for a few days.
  • Use pre-cut squash and sweet potatoes to save time.
  • Roast frozen vegetables.
  • Cook and freeze lentils and barley.
  • Use canned lentils. Just rinse and drain well.


The 150 Power Bowl

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Yield: 4 bowls


  • Roasted winter vegetables
  • 6 cups of winter vegetables cut into 1/2” chunks (squash, beets, parsnips, mushrooms)
  • 2 T canola oil
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 cups green lentils, cooked (use canned if you wish – just rinse and drain really well)
  • 2 cups barley, cooked
  • 4 cans of sardines (preferably canned in water)
  • Maple mustard dressing
  • ¼ cup canola oil
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper


  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Toss vegetables with canola oil.
  3. Roast for 30 minutes until tender.
  4. Whisk dressing ingredients in a small bowl.
  5. To assemble bowls: Divide ingredients equally among four bowls. Drizzle on maple mustard dressing.
